DP2 Careers Update 1, Monday 30 August

Dear DP2 Parents and Students,

Welcome to DP2. We have been back at school for a whole week and I am sure that you feel as though you have never been away. The DP2 year is a busy year with internal assessments, extended essay, CAS requirements and so on to complete. In addition to completing the IB Diploma Programme this school year DP2 students also need to complete their research regarding what to do after Rijnlands and then apply for one or more courses.

In order to make this process as smooth as possible I will be sending a Careers Update via the SMS system once ever three weeks.  This update will include information about open days, application deadlines and so forth and will, I hope, prove helpful to DP2 students and parents alike.

DP2 students have already filled in a form for me giving me as much information as possible as to what their plans are and giving me their e mail address so that I can easily contact them. In addition I would like all DP2 students to have met with me to talk about their plans by the end of term 1. Please sign up for an appointment. The sign up sheet is outside my office.

Applications to British Universities

Useful websites
www.ucas.com (central registration)
www.ukcoursefinder.com (online test for degree courses)
www.push.co.uk (consumers’ guide)

There will be a meeting for all students who are (thinking of) applying to British Universities on Friday 3 September at 11 o’clock in room N218.

Please note that all applications to British universities have to be made via UCAS, using the school’s own ‘buzzword’. DP2 students applying to British universities will receive instructions in the meeting on Friday. In addition, the instruction sheet is on the school website in the section ‘UCAS’.

Applications to British universities have to be made very early – students applying to Oxford or Cambridge or to read medicine must complete their part of the online application process by 30th September 2010. After this I will complete their application adding their predicted grades and reference form school and ensure that their application reaches UCAS by 15 October.
All other applications to British universities must be submitted by 30th November. These deadlines are internal, but must be adhered to as I need time to add predicted grades and a reference from school before submitting the completed application.

Students may apply for to up to 5 different universities. It is advisable to apply to 5 similar courses as it is only possible to submit one personal statement and one reference. Successful applicants will be made a conditional offer which states that you have place if you score a certain number of points in your IB diploma.

Important – some British university courses require students to sit an additional entrance examination or aptitude test. Please check the UCAS website and the university’s own website carefully and in good time.

Applications to American Universities and Colleges

Useful websites
www.collegeboard.com (also for SAT, PSAT and TOEFL registration)

If you wish to apply to an American university or college you must have taken
SATs, TOEFL if necessary. SATs can be taken at the American School and students wishing to take SATS must register on line via www.collegboard.com.  The deadline for Common application is the end of November in DP2. If you are applying to just one institution it is advisable to have sent your application before the Christmas break in DP2.

Personal Statement Workshop

More and more degree courses require students to submit a personal statement or letter of motivation along with their application.  Mr Rob Oliver runs a personal statement workshop for all DP2 students. Unfortunately, Mr Oliver was sick and unable to run the workshop in the first week of the new school year as scheduled. I am trying to reschedule the workshop, hopefully for next week. Students are welcome to pick up a handout from me in advance.
In addition students can e mail their personal statements to me or to Mr Oliver (robolivers@yahoo.co.uk)  for feedback and suggestions. Mr Oliver will be in school on Monday 27 September from 08:30 until 11:30 to work with students individually on their personal statements. There is a sign up sheet on the notice board outside the careers office.

Finally

I hope that this careers update will prove to be an efficient way of helping DP2 students and their parents. It is not intended to replace personal contact, so please, students and parents, don’t hesitate to make an appointment or e mail me.

Kind regards
Penny Taylor

DP2 CAREER COUNSELLING

The final year in secondary education is not all about examination preparation; fundamental choices will have to be made about future careers and thus, for 95% or more of our students, entry into tertiary education.
In DP2 the focus is on helping the students with the actual application process to universities and colleges.
In The Netherlands and the UK, applications are processed by a central organisation, but for other countries the individual universities themselves have to be contacted and the latter takes time..
